Social Studies Essentials

What
Social Studies Essentials is a greenfield Nuxt/Vue application that reimagines the Social Studies product currently being developed on the Atlas platform. It shares the same Discovery Education authentication and content ecosystem but applies a fresh design language, modern frontend architecture, and optional AI features (powered by Anthropic) to deliver a lighter, more intuitive experience.
Why
Atlas is a proven platform, but its legacy architecture constrains how quickly we can iterate on design and interaction patterns. Building a parallel UX treatment lets us explore bolder ideas — faster load times, streamlined navigation, AI-assisted learning — without disrupting the Atlas roadmap. It's a low-risk way to validate whether a modern stack meaningfully improves engagement and usability before committing to a broader re-platform.
Success Looks Like
Success means producing a working reference that demonstrates measurably better UX outcomes — faster time-to-content, higher task completion rates, and positive teacher/student sentiment — compared to the Atlas equivalent. If the data supports it, Social Studies Essentials becomes the blueprint for migrating additional subjects off the legacy stack.
Who's It For
The end users are K–12 Social Studies teachers and students within the Discovery Education ecosystem. Strategically, this project serves DE product and engineering leadership by providing a concrete, testable answer to the question: "Is a modern re-platform worth the investment?"
