Customer Trials Journey (SSE)
The Discovery Education trial-start experience — a Layers-based app that lets educators, school admins, and DE staff start free product trials in a few clicks, built to work across every product and business line.
What
A Nuxt app extending three shared platform layers (rad-trials-layer, rad-products-layer, rad-platform-layer) that hosts every trial-start flow in one place: a themed product gallery, a "trial everything" one-click hero, per-teacher campaign trials, non-logged-in admin school-wide trials, and expired/take-action prompts. Real licensing runs through EDDE's Trials API; internal demo controls let staff toggle products and mint campaigns on the fly. The UX rebuilds the existing EDDE /learn/free-registration flow on the Layers boilerplate.
Why
Trial signup has lived in scattered, product-specific flows. Trials centralizes it into a single, well-governed experience where the product catalog, ordering, branding, trial lengths, and campaign mapping are managed from a shared master catalog rather than re-implemented per product. Because it's built on the platform layers, the same trial machinery can be reused across product and business lines instead of rebuilt each time — one funnel, consistent theming/auth/analytics, and a governed source of truth for what's trialable.
Success Looks Like
A prospective user can go from a campaign link or the gallery to an active, real trial license with minimal friction; DE teams can add or reorder trialable products through catalog config without new code; and every product/business line adopts the same trial path rather than one-off implementations. When EDDE can't license a request, the flow still completes for demo purposes and reports why — so it works reliably for both live signups and internal previews.
Who's It For
Educators / teachers — start a free trial for a specific product via a campaign link, with live school typeahead.
School administrators — start a school-wide trial without needing to log in.
Discovery Education itself — staff use the demo/manage controls to preview flows, mint campaigns, and toggle products; and the whole thing is a reusable foundation other DE product and business teams build their trial funnels on.
